January 14th - Effective Group Psychotherapy: Focus on Addictions and Complex Trauma
Presented by Michael Eiden
Session Description:
Effective Group Psychotherapy: Focus on Addictions and Complex Trauma offers clinicians a practical, experiential introduction to group work with clients navigating addictive processes and complex trauma. Drawing from psychodynamic, process-oriented, and experiential models, this training demonstrates how the group becomes a social microcosm where interpersonal patterns, attachment dynamics, and trauma residues naturally emerge. Participants will learn core facilitation skills that enhance cohesion, safety, and therapeutic change, as well as structured experiential interventions—including role-based exercises, trauma-informed storytelling methods, and family systems–focused techniques. Emphasis is placed on working in the here-and-now, strengthening group members’ capacity for emotional regulation, and facilitating corrective relational experiences that support recovery and integration.
Learning Objectives:
Objective #1: Apply key elements from psychodynamic, process, and experiential models to addiction and trauma groups.
Objective #2: Apply core group psychotherapy techniques to enhance safety, cohesion, and therapeutic change.
Objective #3: Implement three effective experiential interventions within a therapy group setting.

January 21st - Navigating Change Talk: The Spirit and Practice of Motivational Interviewing
Presented by Fredrick Dombrowski
Session Description:
Although many people may have habits in their lives they would like to change, it may be extremely difficult for many people to change these behaviors and follow up with goals. Despite an individual indicating their plan to change, it can still be difficult to do so. Motivational Interviewing (MI) is an evidence-based clinical intervention which uses the client’s own motivation and goals to help change various aspects of their lives. MI uses specific language and speech which helps the client move towards change and their goals. This presentation will identify the basic foundations of MI. Participants will identify how to apply MI for clients who are ambivalent to change. Participants will also be able to identify ways to navigate potential barriers in MI.
Learning Objectives:
Objective #1: Participants will identify the basic foundational principles of MI.
Objective #2: Participants will be able to apply the DARNCAT system of communication to help clients engage in change.
Objective #3: Participants will identify how to apply MI concepts to clients who may be ambivalent to change.
Objective #4: Participants will identify how to navigate barriers to MI.

January 28th - Adult ADHD and Substance Use Disorders: A Complicated Relationship
Presented by Dr. Lin Hogan
Session Description:
Recent research continues to highlight the high risk for comorbid Attention Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) in patients with Substance Use Disorders (SUD); and conversely, the high risk for SUD developing in ADHD across the lifespan, particularly in the context of comorbidity. Although ADHD pharmacotherapy does not increase the risk for SUD, medication treatment alone does not appear to be particularly effective in treating SUD in currently active substance abusing populations. This training will focus on the pharmacological, psychotherapeutic, and behavioral interventions to treat and manage comorbid adult ADHD and SUD.
Learning Objectives:
Objective #1: Attendees will learn the nature of ADHD and Substance Use Disorder diagnoses, characteristics of their comorbidities, and how the two conditions might be linked.
Objective #2: Attendees will gain an understanding of the types of and need for early treatment interventions of both conditions.
Objective #3: Attendees will learn the pharmacological and behavioral approaches currently used to manage these comorbidities.
