July 16th - Methamphetamine Abuse: The Perfect Storm of Consequences

Presented by Dr. Lin Hogan

Session Description

The use of methamphetamine (meth) is a serious problem in the US. Approximately 5% of the US population has tried meth at least once. Consequences of meth abuse are far-reaching causing significant psychological, medical, and social problems. Meth use can cause memory loss, aggression, psychosis, and violent behaviors. Physical problems include damage to the cardiovascular system, dental problems, and malnutrition. Meth use contributes to the spread of communicable diseases, legal problems, and can have devastating effects on the user's social life. This presentation will outline and detail the signs and symptoms of meth use, abuse, and dependence. It will cover topics ranging from the etiology and onset of meth use, including psychological and physical effects, and the best course of treatment. 


Learning Objectives

Objective #1: Attendees will gain an understanding of the nature of substance use disorders with particular focus on the statistical prevalence, morbidity, and mortality rates related to meth use. 

Objective #2: Attendees will gain an understanding of the neurological, psychological, and physical consequences of meth use. 

Objective #3: Attendees will gain an understanding of the best practices for working with, helping, and treating individuals with meth use disorders. 

Presenter Bio

Dr. Lin Hogan is the Clinical Director of Weems Community Mental Health Center in Meridian, MS., and is the Managing Director of Hogan Psychological Services, LLC. Dr. Hogan earned his Bachelor's degree in Psychology from the University of West Florida, and his Master's degree in Counseling from Troy University. He earned his Doctoral degree in Clinical Psychology from the Forest Institute of Professional Psychology in Springfield, Missouri. His clinical focus is on Adult Psychotherapy, Health Psychology, Integrative Healthcare, Chronic Pain Management, and Substance Abuse Treatment. In addition, Dr. Hogan conducts training seminars and courses for mental health and substance abuse professionals, and is a lecturer at Mississippi State University where he teaches courses in Abnormal Psychology, Cognitive Psychology, Clinical Psychology, Sensation & Perception, Psychology of Aging, and Substance Use Disorder Counseling.


July 23rd - Treating Internet Addiction: Gaming, Pornography, Social Media, and Gambling

Session Description

This hour and a half training provides an essential overview of problematic screen and internet use, including internet gaming, social media dependency, pornography, and online gambling. As screen time continues to rise across all age groups, its impact on mental health and public safety has become increasingly evident, contributing to concerns such as anxiety, depression, attention difficulties, social isolation and impulsive disorders. This session is designed for both mental health professionals, law enforcement, and concerned families.


Learning Objectives

Objective #1: Accurately assess compulsive screen and internet use by applying current diagnostic criteria and assessment tools

Objective #2: Identify and explain the physiological and neurological mechanisms underlying screen compulsivity

Objective #3: Identify three key elements of an effective abstinence period for screen use and apply them in treatment planning

Presenter Bio

Michael Eiden, LCSW, LCADC, CSAT, CCS, is a therapist, educator, and consultant specializing in addiction, trauma, and behavioral health. He is the founder of Eiden Integrative Counseling, where he provides therapy, leads psychotherapy groups, and offers continuing education trainings for clinicians. Michael also consults with behavioral health centers to develop programming for treating screen addiction and complex trauma using experiential methods. His PhD research focuses on equipping parents with practical strategies to address and prevent screen addiction in their children, bridging the gap between neuroscience, behavioral psychology, and real-world parenting challenges.

Presenter Bio

Lisa Connors, PhD, LCPC, NCC, MAC, is a Licensed Clinical Professional Counselor, National Certified Counselor and Master Addiction Counselor with over 30 years in the human services/social work/counseling/addiction fields. She has worked in various settings, providing services to the despondent and downtrodden. She works tirelessly to help others reach their fullest potential, helping and supporting those oppressed, stigmatized, marginalized, and victimized. Her greatest passion is working with individuals affected by HIV/AIDS, substance use and mental health disorders, grief and loss, and social and racial injustices. In addition to her clinical work, Dr. Connors is a Pastor, college professor, grief coach, and consultant/trainer. Dr. Connors holds a Bachelor of Social Work, Master of Divinity, Master of Arts in Professional Counseling, and Ph.D. in Psychology degrees.


August 6th - Peak Performance: Substance Use Prevention and Wellness for Athletes

Session Description

This session highlights the many stressors today's student athletes experience. We will discuss how substances can negatively affect performance while discussing ways athletes can stay healthy both physically and mentally.


Learning Objectives

Objective #1: Participants will better understand the stressors that affect student athletes at both the high school and collegiate levels.

Objective #2: Participants will be educated on substance use among student athletes and how those substances negatively affect performance.

Objective #3: Participants will be able to identify healthy strategies for student-athletes to cope with stress.
