Driver Safety Plan Assessment (OWI)
Addiction Resource Council is the designated assessment facility for residents of Waukesha County. All availability is offered on the schedule below. Appointments are in person.
ASSESSMENT INFORMATION
The driver safety plan assessment is the first piece of the court-ordered process and a requirement by the WisDOT for anyone arrested/convicted of operating while intoxicated (OWI). An alcohol or drug assessment is an hour long interview between a driver and an alcohol & other drug abuse assessor (AODA). The assessor examines the driver’s alcohol/drug use. As part of the assessment, the assessor develops a Driver Safety Plan for the driver which is the second step that needs to be completed to remain compliant with the WisDOT. These two steps are required by the DOT.
If you are not a Waukesha County resident, please click here for a directory of the designated facility for each county in Wisconsin or go to the bottom of this page.
If you reside in Milwaukee County, contact Impact for more information.
PLEASE NOTE: EFFECTIVE JULY 1ST, 2025 OWI ASSESSMENT FEE WILL RAISE FROM $280 TO $300.
When is an assessment required?
Anyone arrested/convicted of operating while intoxicated (OWI) or a driving under the influence (DUI) related offense is required to contact the approved assessment facility in their county of residence within 72 hours of conviction date. The DOT requires you to have your assessment completed within 60 days of conviction. Please note that you must schedule your appointment with ARC well in advance of that 60 days as sometimes our appointments are in high demand. Your assessment must be *SCHEDULED - not complete* within 72 hours of your conviction date in order to stay in compliance with the DOT.
You have 72 hours (3 business days) after your OWI conviction to schedule an assessment with the designated assessment agency (ARC is the designated facility for Waukesha County). Failure to schedule an assessment within the 72 you will be put into non compliance with the DOT.
If you do not complete an assessment, all licenses are suspended/revoked/canceled, including occupational licenses. The individual will be in noncompliance with the WisDOT until they complete their assessment. Once an assessment is completed, the individual will be placed back in compliance and eligible to get their license back. Please note that the DOT will charge a fee to get your license back.
What fees are involved?
The fee for a Driver Safety Assessment is $280.00 ($300 as of July 1st, 2025). This fee must be paid in full at the time of scheduling and we do have a pre-payment plan available. Credit/debit cards and cash are accepted forms of payment. We cannot give change, so please bring the exact amount you owe. Payment must be paid BEFORE your assessment appointment. It is your responsibility to pay all fees owed by the date the assessment is performed. The assessment will need to be rescheduled if you do not have the full amount owed at that time and there will be a penalty fee assessed and the assessment may need to be rescheduled.
Additional fees may be incurred if we need to file amended paperwork, extend your driver safety plan, or file reinstatement paperwork. To reduce additional costs, keep your Assessment Specialist informed about any change in compliance with the Driver Safety Plan developed at your assessment.
Where will the appointment be located?
All assessments will be IN PERSON appointments. Please make proper arrangements when scheduling your appointment.
We are located at N27W23960 Paul Rd Ste 201, Pewaukee, WI 53072. We are in the West Wind Office Park on the corner of Hwy 164 and Paul Rd and our suite is on the top floor.
Can I get my occupational driver’s license?
Most first offenses can get their occupational driver’s licenses before the assessment. However, they must check with the DMV because the decision is up to them. Second and subsequent OWI convictions require completion of an assessment before receiving eligibility for an occupational license.
