Polysubstance Use During the Opioid Crisis

January 22, 2025

Rural areas of the United States have been disproportionately impacted by the opioid epidemic. To improve treatment outcomes in rural, as well as urban settings, polysubstance use is increasingly recognized as an important determinant. Recent research suggests that for many individuals living with addiction, particularly those with opioid use disorder, polysubstance use is the norm rather than the exception (Cicero et al., 2020; Peppin et al., 2020; Mahoney 3rd et al., 2021; Palamar et al., 2018). In this presentation, participants will learn about the latest research of polysubstance use during the Opioid crisis and acquire targeted clinical interventions tailored to communities impacted the most by the Opioid crisis.

Treatment of Individuals with Stimulant Use Disorder: Emphasis on Contingency Management

August 14, 2024

Contingency management (CM) is a powerful behavioral strategy that has repeatedly been demonstrated to reduce stimulant use by individuals with StimUD.  Use of CM outside of the VA has been rare due to regulatory and funding obstacles.  However, CM is cited in the 2022 National Drug Plan as a priority treatment to address the treatment needs of individuals with cocaine and methamphetamine use disorder.  Delivery of an effective, evidence-based CM protocol that is in compliance with federal guidelines requires careful development of a training and implementation plan.  The presenter will present the steps and key components of the CM protocol and implementation plan being used in California in the first large-scale implementation of CM outside the VA.

HOW WE SPEAK MATTERS: UNDOING STIGMATIZING LANGUAGE

May 8, 2024

Language is important. How we speak to and about individuals is ultimately how we treat them. The language we use is vital when it comes to prevention, education, treatment, and recovery from those experiencing problems with substance use, mental health, gambling and other areas of need, care, and services. The use of some language continues to be outdated, not based on clinical application, stigmatizing, and even harmful. Unfortunately, this common language continues to be used in various settings.  The language we use is evident in our collaboration efforts, engaging with communities, documentation, and in direct services we provide individuals. Professionals may not realize the impact language may have on the people they serve. Using these types of words can impact someone not seeking help, disengaging in services, discouraging progress, and feelings of humiliation and shame. As further movement encourages the use of patient- centered language there is a need to incorporate ways to undo the language we've used and utilize new language to foster safe environments for recovery.

HEY, DON'T FORGET US…WE NEED TO GRIEVE, TOO!

January 31, 2024

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), there were an estimated 110,000 overdose deaths in the 12 months ending in March 2023, with fentanyl and other synthetic opioids as the leading causes of these deaths. When loved ones die, families, friends, significant others, and communities are left to grieve their losses. Grief is a normal response to overdose deaths, and sorrow can happen in response to death and non-death losses. Death as a result of a drug overdose is considered a stigmatized loss. It is a loss that does not meet the "socially" approved categories. Shame and blame can be directed towards those left behind, making it more challenging to process the loss and grieve. This interactive webinar will explore the various components of grief and loss, especially when it involves overdose deaths. It will encourage families and communities to create "safe grieving spaces" when it does not seem proper or when it looks like families and communities are being dismissed, forgotten, punished, or penalized in their grief. This webinar will also help families and communities identify and implement healthier coping and healing methods before and after an overdose death.

SUBSTANCE USE DISORDERS, SUICIDE, AND RECOVERY: BEYOND SHAME AND STIGMA

November 8, 2023

Shame and stigma are examined as significant predisposing factors to increased suicide risk in individuals currently struggling with or in early recovery from substance use disorders. Tying in principles and methods from his recent books on recovery resilience, Bob Weathers, PhD, CMHRS, explains how nuanced physiological changes that occur in the addictive brain often contribute to increased suicidal ideation. Finally, he incorporates cognitive-behavioral and mindfulness strategies, along with creative process and relational neuroscience, into a more advanced set of resources to aid in sustained and successful recovery while at the same time reducing suicide risk in this vulnerable clinical population.

THINK LIKE AN INTERVENTIONIST

November 1, 2023

Sometimes the most common guidance people get is misinformed, misplaced, and can unfortunately keep people stuck in their illness.  For example, who hasn't heard that someone "just has to hit rock bottom" in order to accept help for their substance use.  There is no other illness that we would routinely wait until it gets much worse before we attempt to begin treatment.  Why should addiction be any different?  People deserve help sooner.  And so do the family members affected by addiction.  In this session, I will dispel common myths and misconceptions about interventions and addiction, and discuss why people are sometimes hesitant to utilize this service.  I'll describe the process of an intervention and discuss why this can be such an empowering, healing process for families.  With an accurate understanding of the process, this service can assist in halting the progression of addiction sooner AND be an asset to the treatment team.

HARM REDUCTION 101

August 16, 2023

Harm Reduction is gaining increasing attention in helping those impacted by use disorders and is gaining organizational support, including from SAMHSA and the National Institute on Drug Abuse (NIDA). Few professionals have received adequate education and training on harm reduction. As a result, harm reduction is often filled with misunderstandings and misinformation that create stigmas towards its evidence-based use. Substance use prevention, education, treatment, and recovery have used harm reduction strategies throughout, and yet it is only more recently gaining the much-needed attention to help those who use substances. Learn about what harm reduction is, what it is not, and ways to apply it in clinical settings.

Marijuana: Substance Use and Mental Health Fact vs. Fiction

This presentation will help to clear up common misconceptions about marijuana, particularly among young people. As marijuana becomes legal in more states, it is easy for families to misinterpret this to mean that it is safe for their teens. This is not the case. This information is not getting conveyed enough to our youth in this era of growing cultural acceptance.

Exploring Resilience: A Tri-faceted Perspective

January 15th, 2025

Join us for an engaging training session that addresses the critical challenges surrounding access to behavioral healthcare, a pressing issue that has persisted despite the rising need for mental health and substance use support. Recent data reveals that approximately one in three Americans experience symptoms of depression and anxiety, while over 9.2 million individuals aged 12 and older reported misusing opiates in the past year. The COVID-19 pandemic has further strained an already limited mental health system, highlighting the urgent need for effective solutions. Since the emergency declaration on March 13, 2020, by President Trump, the demand for mental health services has soared, yet access remains hindered by a shortage of qualified providers, particularly in rural areas. In fact, a 2022 report identified over 6,300 mental health provider shortage areas across the nation, with projections indicating a shortfall of nearly 27,000 mental health counselors by 2025.

This training session aims to explore these challenges and validate the vital importance of training, coaching, and mentoring within the behavioral health workforce. Through interactive discussions and innovative strategies, participants will gain insights into creative therapeutic approaches designed to enhance access and improve service delivery.  This session is ideal for mental health professionals, administrators, educators, and anyone passionate about expanding access to behavioral healthcare. Join us as we collaborate to develop solutions that will empower the behavioral health workforce and make a meaningful impact on the communities we serve!

Recovery in the Community: The Importance of Allies

August 28, 2024

Family members, friends, neighbors, professionals, and other community members play a critical role as allies in supporting recovery. Recovery capital refers to the resources, both internal and external, that an individual can draw upon in order to overcome substance use and maintain recovery. The session will begin with a presentation on the recovery ecosystem and recovery capital and will then identify real world examples of ways allies in communities have supported recovery by changing the community environment and creating opportunities to boost recovery capital.
